Coaxial Antenna not getting good reception.?

I just put up a coaxial antenna for my police scanner. Before i put it around my chimney (i wrapped it around about 12 the up the chimney) i had just thrown it up on the roof and i got better reception than i do now. Would it be better to run it up a tree rather than just up the roof and chimney?
