Why did Jesus denounce them?

This is one of the more interesting genuinely religious questions I've seen here. Jesus is referring to the kinds of "gifts" that many believers are so fond of as "iniquity". Of course that's exactly right: claiming to cast out devils or to predict the future is nothing more than lying shamelessly: iniquity in any decent person's book.
