Is the Muslim faith right in denouncing alcohol?

Looking at all the crime, child abuse, violence, domestic turmoil, death, destruction, drain on the NHS, police time wasted, poverty, pestilence, social decay and all the other negative effects that alcohol causes in the UK, is Islam right in rejecting it?
